SAMANTHA JO KURI
MIXED MEDIA ARTIST | NEWPORT BEACH, CA | GET OUTSIDE
Born and raised and currently an Orange County resident, but my heart lives in SLO. I graduated from Cal Poly in 2010 and stayed in the area for years after. The tranquility, beauty, and peace this part of the coast has brought me is unmatched and shows through in most of my pieces. I currently have a day job as an analyst in the Wine & Spirits Industry and, in my free time, I am usually outside and with my better half. I am an avid trail runner and have completed several ultra-marathons. I like the views from the trails – of the sky, of the ocean, of my soul.
When I’m not working or running, I am painting. My paintings all reflect the views from my runs and are inspired by the deep serenity and chaos of the ocean and cosmos. How they can be, and are, all-consuming but, at the same time, so distant and untouchable - much like emotions. Looking outward to catch a glimpse of what’s inside. That’s why my by-line is “Get outside” – get outside physically, so you can get outside of your head. I don’t paint because I am in pain or happy. I paint to understand and meditate on how the pain or happiness affects me and how it affects the world around me.
I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. // John Muir
